Mahashweta devi’s draupadi a narrative of nation free essay sample

The present paper is a modest attempt to analyze Mahashweta Devis Draupadi as a narrative of India- a narrative that explains how politics work in a society and that provides a profound insight into the forces that makes an attitudonal shift. Mahashweta Devis short story Draupadi captures the experiences of a tribal woman. She is involved in a social movement- the Naxalite movement in India. She is living in the Jharkhani forest with a group of Naxalite rebels. The story reveals several significant facts about the Santal tribe through the reminiscences of Draupadi. Firstly women are shown clearly protected by the men of the tribe as the phrase stood guard over their womens blood implies. Secondly, as a group that expected and received such patriarchal â€Å"protection,† the women seem not to have engaged in warfare for Dopdi does not mention foremothers in this regard. Thus the proud reference to the â€Å"black armour† of the forefathers is also significant, as this seems to indicate that the Santal men were perhaps (good) warriors. We will write a custom essay sample on Mahashweta devi’s draupadi: a narrative of nation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Alas! The same could be the state of tribal people today! The same could be the location of a woman today! It is indeed a matter of lamentation Mahashweta shows how a woman suffers in psychologically, emotionally and physically in society. She swings with oppression between the two versions of her name. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak in her foreword to Draupadi observes: Draupadi is the name of the central character. She is introduced to the reader between two uniforms and between two versions of her name. Dopdi and Draupadi. It is either that as a tribal she cannot pronounce her own Sanskrit name Draupadi, or the tribalized form, Dopdi, is the proper name of the ancient Draupadi. It is also noticeable in the foreword that the tribes have no right to heroic names as Draupadi is perhaps the most celebrated heroine of the Indian epic Mahabharata. For this pious, domesticated Hindu name was given Dopdi at birth by her mistress, in the usual mood of benevolence felt by the oppressors wife towards the tribal bond servant. Here the name Dopdi, the protagonist is indicative of the doubly marginalized location of a woman in a nation. The change of name from Dopdi to Draupadi brings another kind of oppression to her. When the name gets transformed, she is raped and raped brutally. The comrades instead of saving her modesty through the implicit intervention of a benign and divine, raped her. Senanayak, the head asked others to Make her. Do the needful. Thus, after Senanayak leaves Draupdi, the narrative re-enacts Draupdi’s consciousness and loss of consciousness, opening and closing of eyes. â€Å"Shaming her, a tear trickles out of the corner of her eye. In the muddy moon light she lowers her lightless eye, sees her breasts, and understands that, indeed, she had been made up right. Her breasts are bitten raw, the nipples torn. How many? Four-five-six-seven There is however no room for doubt. The brutality of the rape is brought out in its stark reality through these â€Å"impressions. † Since Draupdi regains consciousness after this, the second rape sequence is actually presented. She doesnt have to wait long. And the process of making her begins. Goes on. † It is seen that the scene of rape in â€Å"Draupadi† occurs at the end of the short story. However, instead of building up to it as a kind of climax, it proves to be a â€Å"beginning. † Thus, while the apprehension of Draupdi is viewed as her end â€Å"Dopdi Mejhen is about to be apprehended. Will be destroyed† there is a sudden metamorphosis in Dopdi. Until this moment, when â€Å"she crosses the sexual differential into the field of what could only happen to a woman,† she remains faithful to the patriarchal (moral) code of her tribe handed down to her by her forefathers. Dopdi’s training has taught her to sacrifice herself for the cause. Her standards of conduct are governed by the old code of the Santal tribe and that code dictates that one must never betray the members of one’s tribe. Dopdi’s current â€Å"tribe† consists also of her comrades in arms. Thus when she is captured and first questioned and later raped and tortured she adopts a mode of passive resistance, still holding on to the patriarchal traditions that inscribed her and the instructions imbibed through repeated listening. Although she has heard what it is to be tortured, —â€Å"when they counter you, your hands are tied behind you. All your bones are crushed, your sex is a terrible wound†Ã¢â‚¬â€ But in the final scene she realizes that the experiences she went through are those uniquely female ones and it is at this point that Draupadi recreates into a powerful agent. Unlike the mute women and asking for help Draupadi questions the sinners. Instead of crying she shakes the comrades who raped her. After rape, when a piece of cloth was given to her she tears her piece of cloth with her teeth. Senanayak is surprised on seeing her naked body and he is about to cry. Draupadi stands before him, naked. . Draupadi comes closer. Stands with her hand on her hip, and says. You asked them to make me up, dont you want to see how they made me? Draupadi says in a terrifying voice, Whats the use of clothes? You can strip me, but how can you clothe me again? Are you a man? There isn’t a man here that I should be ashamed†. Here she challenges and derides their â€Å"masculinity. † This is a reworking of the scene of humiliation in the Mahabharata where the mythical Draupadi was â€Å"saved† from the humiliating experience of being stripped, through divine intervention. But Draupadi re-writes this script. Dopdi does not let her nakedness shame her, her torture intimidate her, or her rape diminish her. Thus the Draupadi identity that she has been saddled with due to the name given to her by Surja Sahu’s wife in what Spivak calls the â€Å"usual mood of benevolence felt by the oppressor’s wife toward the tribal bond servant† is replaced with one based on the Goddess Kali. The fact that Dopdi models herself on Kali is significant for Kali, traditionally depicted as standing on top of Shiva, symbolizes Indian female power. Significantly therefore, the description of Dopdi/Draupadi in the last scene is very similar to traditional depictions of Kali. â€Å"Draupadi’s black body comes even closer. Draupadi shakes with an indomitable laughter that Senanayak simply cannot understand. Her ravaged lips bleed as she begins laughing. Draupadi wipes her blood on her palm† and issues a challenge to Senanayak and his armed force â€Å"I will not let you put my cloth on me. What more can you do? Come on counter me†. This last metamorphosis baffles even the all-knowing Senanayak and â€Å"for the first time Senanayak is afraid to stand before an unarmed target, terribly afraid† The reversal of traditional gender and authority roles is complete. Senanayak and the army, the dominant males, the tormentors and authority figures, now â€Å"stand before† Draupdi as though before an almighty and powerful force. Her refusal and indeed her challenge to the men â€Å"to put [her] cloth on† is a powerful refusal to revert back to the accepted status quo and to hide or blur her new identity as a primeval Indian female force. For, unlike Draupadi of the Mahabharata, Dopdi cannot escape her fate through divine intervention. But something much more dramatic happens. She survives the ordeal triumphantly and is thereby empowered to â€Å"become† the goddess. Her tormentors are now â€Å"terribly afraid. † This is how Mahashweta depicts how politics work in a society and crushes women, instead of shaping them. She is companion of man, but is still dominated and suppressed by men. She also creates an awareness amongst the nation that women of today can handle any difficulty with perseverance and her consciousness. Draupadi proved that woman is the magnificent creation of god, a multi faced personality with the power of integrity and tolerance. She proved the statement correct that The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

Definition of LD50 or Lethal Dose 50 Test

Definition of LD50 or Lethal Dose 50 Test Updated and edited on May 20, 2016 by Michelle A. Rivera, About.com Animal Rights Expert The LD50 test is one of the most controversial and inhumane experiments endured by laboratory animals. â€Å"LD† stands for â€Å"lethal dose†; the â€Å"50† means that half the animals, or 50 percent of the animals forced to endure testing the product, will die at that dose. LD50 value for a substance will vary according to the species involved. The substance may be administered any number of ways, including orally, topically, intravenously, or through inhalation. The most commonly used species for these tests are rats, mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Substances tested might include household products, drugs or pesticides. These particular animals are popular with animal testing facilities because they are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act which states, in part:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   AWA 2143 (A)   Ã¢â‚¬Å"†¦for animal care, treatment, and practices in experimental procedures to ensure that animal pain and distress are minimized, including adequate veterinary care with the appropriate use of anesthetic, analgesic, tranquilizing drugs, or euthanasia;†¦Ã¢â‚¬ The LD50 test is controversial because the results have limited, if any, significance when applied to humans. Determining the amount of a substance that will kill a mouse has little value to human beings. Also controversial is the number of animals frequently involved in an LD50 trial, which may be 100 or more animals. Organizations such as the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, among others, have all spoken out publicly against the use of too many animals in order to reach that 50 percent number. Approximately 60-200 animals are used even though the above organizations have indicated that these same tests could be successfully concluded by using only six to ten animals. The tests involved testing for â€Å",,,toxicity of gases and powders (the inhalation LD50), irritancy and internal poisoning due to skin exposure (the dermal LD50), and toxicity of substances injected directly into anim al tissue or body cavities (the injectable LD50),† according to the New England Anti-Vivisection Society, whose mission it is to end animal testing and supporting alternatives to testing on live animals. The animals used are almost never given anesthesia and suffer tremendous pain during these tests. Because of public outcry and advances in science, the LD50 test has been largely replaced by alternative test measures. In â€Å"Alternatives to Animal Testing, (Issues in Environmental Science and Technology)† a number of contributors* discuss alternatives that have been adopted by laboratories around the world including the Acute Toxic Class method, the Up and Down and Fixed Dose procedures.   According to the National Institute of Heath, the Consumer Product Safety Commission strongly discourages the use of the LD50 test, while the Environmental Protection Agency discourages its use, and, perhaps the most unnerving, the Food and Drug Administration does not require the LD50 test for cosmetic testing. Merchants have used the public outcry to their advantage. Some have added the words â€Å"cruelty free† or some other indication that the company does not use animal testing on their finished product. But beware of these claims because there is no legal definition for these labels. So the manufacturer may not test on animals, but it’s entirely possible that the manufacturers of the ingredients which comprise the product are tested on animals. International trade has also added to the confusion. While many companies have learned to avoid testing on animals as a public relations measure, the more the United States opens trades with other countries, the higher the chance that animal testing will again be part of the manufacture of a product previously deemed cruelty free. For example, Avon, one of the first companies to speak out against animal testing, has begun selling their products to China. China requires some animal testing be done on certain products before being offered to the public. Avon chooses, of course, to sell to China rather than stand on ceremony and stick to their cruelty-free guns. And while these tests may or may not involve LD-50, the fact is that all the laws and regulations that have been so hard fought and won by animal-rights activists over the years wont mean a thing in a world where global trade is the norm.   If you want to live a cruelty-free life and enjoy following a vegan lifestyle, you have to be part detective and research the products you use every day. *R E Hester  (Editor),  R M Harrison  (Editor),  Paul Illing  (Contributor),  Michael Balls  (Contributor),  Robert Combes  (Contributor),  Derek Knight  (Contributor),  Carl Westmoreland  (Contributor) Edited by Michelle A. Before decorating you resume with powerful words, you need to complete the template with core information. Use our guide on writing a resume. A word of caution: though you want to use adjectives, you dont want to overdo them. Think powerful yet tasteful. Dont knock them over the head with your dynamic, enthusiastic, incredible, resourceful self. Instead, consider the areas you want to highlight and choose exciting adjectives to bring out your best qualities. Learn how to choose wisely with the following tips: Use Active Adjectives A lot has been written about using action verbs in the resume. What about active adjectives? Using strong adjectives can have just as big an impact as action verbs. Try including words like â€Å"persistent† â€Å"passionate†, â€Å"enterprising†, â€Å"vigorous† and â€Å"determined†. Be Positive Employers love to know that a candidate has a positive outlook on things. Someone who has a positive attitude can help elevate a companys morale, inspire other team members and allow others to indulge their creativity and innovation. Words such as â€Å"exceptional†, â€Å"optimistic†, â€Å"positive†, â€Å"extroverted†, â€Å"personable† and â€Å"sincere† can make a great impact on an employer. Show Them Youre Flexible Things dont always go as planned and an employee that can handle a curve ball or two is a valued asset to any company. Someone who can think on their feet, withstand pressure and turn a misfortune into an opportunity is worth their weight in gold. Adjectives such as â€Å"dynamic†, â€Å"resourceful†, â€Å"adaptable†, â€Å"broad-minded†, â€Å"versatile† and â€Å"foresight† can sell your skills as an expert troubleshooter. Demonstrate Leadership If the position youre applying for calls for leadership skills, make sure you highlight yours with the right adjectives. Try â€Å"leading†, â€Å"diplomatic†, â€Å"facilitating†, â€Å"team-building† and â€Å"guiding† to let them know that you can lead a project to success. Display Your Dedication An employee who shows loyalty to a company is a valuable assent. Make sure you let a potential employer know that youre â€Å"dedicated†, â€Å"loyal†, â€Å"dependable†, and â€Å"reliable† . Standing by the company in trying times can earn you extra points to future employers. Highlight Your Creativity Someone who can think outside the box can bring a lot to any business. In fact, these are some of the most valued qualities at top companies such as Google and Apple. Tell them how â€Å"innovative†, â€Å"creative†, â€Å"unique†, â€Å"original†, â€Å"inventive† and â€Å"imaginative† you are. While the above can help you impress employers with adjectives, you should also bear the following in mind: Use the Job Description The adjectives used in the job description itself can provide you with the guidance you need. You could go through the effort to find appropriate synonyms, but really, the best way to go is to use the words in the job description. Employers will likely be sifting through a lot of resumes, so its no use being subtle. If theyre looking for a self-starter whos innovative and reliable, then give it to them. Use PAR: Project, Action, Result Sometimes people can go overboard on their adjectives in a resume and employers can get lost in a sea of descriptions. Rather than litter your resume with superfluous adjectives, make sure you apply them effectively by using this method. Use adjectives to describe a project you completed or a skill you possess, an action you executed and the result it produced. Though the job market is highly competitive these days, you can make your resume stand out. Make sure you describe you followed basic resume rules and used the right adjectives.

Theme Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Theme - Essay Example The theme applicable to her story is the importance of developing a strong sense of one's own identity and personal strength, despite challenges and difficulties in life. The essay aims to proffer justifications for the theme of developing a strong sense of identity to enable Ying-ying to regain the life she had, not only for her personal benefit, but more so for her daughter, Lena. Ying-ying’s story through the Moon Lady presented her vivid remembrance of the particularly special day when she was merely four years old and her nursemaid prepared her for the Moon Festival. The depiction of her character was so accurate in portraying a strong sense of fiery identity, always curious, on top of things and wanting to get her way. Despite being told to stay put or to observe traditional norms, Ying-ying defied everything as she narrated running after dragonflies, climbing to the rickshaw with her mother (instead of her amah), running through the length of their boat, watching a bird catch fishes, and falling into the water to be lost during the height of the Moon Festival. With all the commotions, the experience of being lost coincided with the metamorphic loss of her personal identity and strength as the fear that enveloped her during the experience transformed her life to silence and as she failed to relay her wish to the Moon Lady: to be found.

Clock Arithmetic :: essays research papers

Clock Arithmetic The topic of time has always been one of interest to me at least on a philosophical basis. Through the works of Einstein, ancient timepieces and calendars such as Stonehenge, and even theories on past and present, time is everywhere. I chose this topic to perhaps explore further the relevance of clocks and timepieces in mathematics and arithmetic. To gain a better understanding of the mathematical features of time would be rewarding knowing that philosophy and mathematics are closely related. Through what I’ve seen in clock arithmetic the concepts could be taught and applied as early as first grade due to the nature of addition and subtraction involved. Clock Arithmetic is also used for technological reasons. Computer games are manufactured using clock arithmetic to base a character’s position due to the resolution of the screen on a certain axis. Example: Suppose you are playing a video game and the character in the game (let's call him Max) is walking from the left side of the screen to the right side. Max gets to the right side of the screen and keeps walking; he disappears and reappears on the left side of the screen again. If the screen is 12 inches wide and we are keeping track of how far Max is from the left side of the screen, then as soon as he is 12 inches from the left side it's as if he was back at the beginning again. If you put it pictorially, against a clock you’d find that Max would start and end up at the same point. Now I’d like to downgrade and put things in an elementary perspective. If it is 3 o'clock and we add 5 hours to the time that will put us at 8 o'clock, so we could write 3 + 5 = 8. But if it is 11 o'clock and we add 5 hours the time will be 4 o'clock, so we should write 11 + 5 = 4. Now everyone knows that 11 + 5 =16, but there is no 16 on the clock (unless you're on military time). Every time we go past 12 on the clock we start counting the hours at 1 again. If we add numbers the way we add hours on the clock, we say that we are doing clock arithmetic. So, in clock arithmetic 8 + 6 = 2, because 6 hours after 8 o'clock is 2 o'clock.
